£3.99
River the Rat makes an excellent companion, he can smell out adventures and squeak a long tale or two. So claw out your needles and you will soon have a furry friend of your own.
Imagine a Hat could do all that…
This is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern
Inspired by Ratty, in The Wind in the Willows, River the Rat is a friendly Rat and will make a great companion. The main head has instructions for working both flat or in-the-round. Knitted in stocking stitch starting with ear flaps, working up the head and decreasing to shape the crown. The features are knitted separately, sewn together then attached to the head. The round ears give distinctive ratlike features and the snout is stuffed to give extra definition. Whiskers and a mouth are embroidered on. River has small eyes and is finished with his pointy slender tail.

What We're Reading
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
I love this beautiful classic! I even played Ratty in a school play when I was younger and wish I had River to accompany me then! Perhaps Muse the Mole, Tilia the Toad and Bartlett the Badger can help you as you punt along the riverside to seek out adventures.
The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
I wonder if River is hungry because the Rat of the Highway steals food from all the animals he meets and has a bit of a sweet tooth. Maybe Hayden the Horse could be his trusty steed and Dana the Duck the heroine who makes sure the Highway Rat sees the error of his ways.
The Cat and the Rat and the Hat by Em Lynas & Matt Hunt
This is a super fun rhyming picture book. It is quick and funny with bright bold illustrations. Cat wants Rat’s hat, but it doesn’t stop at that, because they meet bat who owns a cravat!
